Merino wool is a particularly valuable type of wool, characterised by its finesse, softness and unique qualities. Merino wool is particularly sought after because of its fineness, which is due to the fact that the hair of a Merino sheep is thinner than the hair of a common sheep. Merino wool is a particularly fine yarn. It is shorn from sheep of the Merino (or Merinos) breed which are found all over the world, but mostly graze in Australia and New Zealand. The processing of Merinos wool usually takes place in spring, when the moulting of the sheep begins due to the rise in temperatures. After shearing, the wool of the shoulders and sides (fine and long), the back (short and coarse) and the belly (short and weak) are separated from the whole fleece. After repeated washing in lukewarm water with degreasing and detergent substances, the wool is thoroughly cleaned before finally undergoing the operation of carding and combing. This consists in freeing the textile fibres from impurities, untangling them and making them parallel, so that they are ideal for the weaving of the garments.
