The name Cashmere comes from a region located between India and Pakistan, formerly called Kashmir. Cashmere fibres are obtained exclusively from the undercoat of a particular breed of goat, the so-called Hircus goat. Cashmere processing takes place in a precise season of the year, spring, when due to the rise in temperatures, the moult of the goats begins. This species of goat, to defend itself from the extremely rigid winter temperatures and wide temperature ranges, produces two coats: the primary fleece or giarra and a secondary one, soft and fluffy, composed of a thick layer of fibres, the duvet. Cashmere wool is obtained by combing this fleece with a special comb to obtain a mixture of fibres which will then be subjected to subsequent processing stages such as washing and colouring.
